- Follow Galileo’s model by allowing each side to develop substantial arguments rather than giving short alternating remarks. The dialogue should contain extended reasoning, counterexamples, thought experiments, and attempts to identify where the disagreement ultimately comes from.
- Clearly distinguish claims that appear in the original texts from new philosophical arguments introduced to explore their implications. Do not attribute invented arguments or statements directly to Gowers or to any individual Fields Medalist.
- The goal should not be to declare a winner. Instead, identify the precise points at which the two positions genuinely diverge, including differences in empirical beliefs, definitions, standards of evidence, attitudes toward uncertainty, and views about the responsibilities of mathematicians.
Write the dialogue as serious intellectual literature rather than as a modern interview or debate transcript. Give the speakers distinct philosophical personalities, and allow the conversation to become progressively deeper as their initial disagreement is reduced to a smaller number of fundamental questions.
